I watched you skip ahead

fresh with sparkling spring air;

your full little red coat still weighty below your knees;

gold sun streaking shards through a halo of baby fine hair.

Then the shadow came swift.

You ceased your next step to turn your pretty head

as the sliding red bonnet nosed at folds of heavy cloth.

Fear did not reveal furrows on your gentle face

but terror was sharp and deafening in me.

I watched the mono plate

bearing your initials

halt at your sandal.

You checked my gaze and resumed a hop;

your guardian angel holding your hand.
